The real issue with the Tree spindle is that there is not really a seal for the lower bearing. There is a close fitting shield, but not seal. If you run coolant, it's just a matter of time. The Tree uses a bearing set at the bottom, and a single bearing at the top. There is also two bearings on the spindle pulley.

The 325 and 425 are the same basic setup but the 425 is bigger, bigger motor if running a rpc it might make a difference, spindle speed, table size, and quite a bit heavier. The 425 is pretty big, the 310/325 takes up about 2 times the floor space of a Bridgeport and weight 3400-3800 pounds, I think the 425 is close to 5000.

A spacer ring sets the take-up to a fixed amount as nearly as I can tell. I said no point in a tare-down till we find some bearings.

Re: New to me Tree Journeyman 425. Drive is the GT series 10HP/7.5kW. The braking seems to be working well. In V/Hz mode P0.00 = 0, the drive takes the motor up to full speed of 267Hz. When I change to sensorless vector mode P0.00 = 1, do autotune again, the drive only takes the motor to around 80Hz on subsequent starts.

I had a 325 and now have a 425. The J models are shorter than many other machines because the motor is mounted inside the column instead of on top of the quill.
